New Horizons

There is a cinema that reflects
the adventure of human existence.
Unpredictable and exciting.
Deeply personal,
yet seeking communication.

It reaches over all longitudes and latitudes. It is represented by artists who ignore preconceived ideas and struggle to express their visions against contemporary multi- national cinema globalisation.

They are mainly young artists whose films open up New Horizons in the eyes and souls of their audience. This "different" and "innovative" cinema is brought to the public through the Informatory Part of the International Film Festival of Thessaloniki: "New Horizons", now in its sixth year of circulation, started off as a daring experiment in a period when independent productions were just making their first timid appearance.

If today new films outside commercial circles gain a broader audience and are distributed all the more easily so that we can all enjoy them all the more, this is due to "New Horizons".

On its screen we discovered unique artists like Canadian Atom Encoyan, American Hal Hartley, Iranian Abbas Kiarostami, Austrian Michael Heinneke, Russian Sergei Bodrov. Thanks to "New Horizons" we were able to see films that went on to make a distinctive statement in the most important world festivals and captivate broad audiences: "The Soloist", "El Mariachi", "Small Ponnette", "The Prisoner of Caucausus".

The experiment has proven successful. "New Horizons", created in 1992 by Dimitri Eipides, proved that this cinema that resists cliches and conventionality, that explores new routes and reflects contemporary trends of the 7th Art concerns us all.

But let us begin at the beginning:
