Gang violence is an every day fact of life in Los Angeles and in all other major American cities. This is the first film to deal with this subject from a female perspective. It is an intimate, multi-layered look at the lives of a group of young Mexican-American women living in the barrios of contemporary Los Angeles, that explores the friendships, loves and rivalries among a group of young women, as they fight to form their own identities. Anders has brought together an attractive young ensemble of mostly unknown Hispanic actresses, some experienced and some actual gang members, who are making their acting debuts. The gang members consulted on the script, helped in location scouting and with hair and make-up, about which there is a complex iconography...
