Pharaon, a thirtyish, single police detective, has a strong sense of duty, but he can be brought to tears by the tragedies of life that his job forces him to witness. Pharaon lives with his mother in the provincial town of Bailleul, on a street which bears the name of his grandfather, Pharaon de Winter (1849-1924), a local artist who belonged to the realist school and painted religious scenes or subjects close to him, in order to better understand humanity. Pharaon seems to have inherited some of his grandfather's sensibilities. He is in love with his neighbor, Domino, a 23-year-old factory worker, but she much prefers making love with a virile young bus driver, Joseph. Pharaon is often allowed to tag along on her dates with Joseph where he suffers in silence. Meanwhile, an 11-year-old girl has been raped and murdered, and Pharaon is overcome by the cruelty and malevolence of the crime. As he begins to work on the case, a feeling of universal guilt begins to overcome him, the guilt of our very monstrous nature.
