  • Felicia, a young Catholic girl, sets out from her native Ireland to try and find her lover. All she knows is the name of the city where Johnny is working. Virtually penniless, Felicia is convinced that finding Johnny will solve all her problems. Arriving in Birmingham, she soon meets an older man, the paternal and solicitous Hilditch, who kindly offers to give her a helping hand. Hilditch is a catering supervisor running a large industrial kitchen. He lives alone in a huge mansion and seems fairly mundane. Every night he watches videotapes of cooking lessons given by a glamorous French woman. Yet Hilditch harbors a secret, and, as Felicia increasingly places her trust in a man who has offered her respite from an uncaring world, Egoyan heightens the suspense, with spectacular results.
