Seventeen years ago. For pretty high school students, Tao Lan and Yu Xiaoqin couldn't be more different. Tao Lan is tough and prone to typical adolescent behavior. Yu Xiaoqin is a diligent student, but a bit on the prissy side. The only things the stepsisters share are: a small bedroom and the same desire to leave the quarrelling atmosphere of home. Tao Lan's mother and Yu Xiaoqin's father pay unequal attention to the two girls. Their divided pride for their respective daughters has developed into an unhealthy competition and worsens the already existing problem...

Biography
Born in 1963 in Nanjing (Jian Su province), China,
he graduated with a B.A. in cinematography from the Beijing Academy of Film in 1989. He works as an independent film director and producer and, in 1994, "Time" magazine selected him as one of the hundred young leading figures
of the world for the next century.
