A young man, Freddy, tries to board a moving freight train, but loses his footing and falls, leaving his bag and cap on the train. Completely stuck, he takes refuge in a service station and telephones a girl, who is pregnant with his child. That's when he notices a young stranger, Albert, stealing a road map and then running off. The two young men meet again at a highway rest area. They begin talking, and we eventually learn the reasons they are on the road alone. Freddy, the elder of the two, is in search of an uncle who will give him some information about the whereabouts of Freddy's father. Albert has escaped from reform school and is trying to track down his mother, with nothing to go on but a postcard she's written him. Together, they travel across the country, walking, hitch-hiking, stealing cars, living off minor hold-ups and pick-pocketing. During their journey, they get to know and appreciate, but also to hate each other, while at the same time discovering the many different faces of rural America.
