This is the story of a father and his two sons. Abandoned by his eldest son who has set off to the Shenzhen economic development region in search of his fortune, the father remains in Beijing raising his retarded son and clinging to his chosen profession as the master of a bathhouse. A custom thousands of years old and a culture onto itself, with its own conventions, rules and concepts, the bathhouse promotes communal equality. Mistakenly believing that his father has passed away, the eldest son returns to Beijing. To his surprise, he is forced to face the responsibilities of family and deal with the problems of modernization as they affect his personal existence.

Biography
One of the pioneer directors of China's underground music video scene, his first feature, Spicy Love Soup, swept all the domestic Chinese awards and was the first independent Chinese film to achieve domestic box office success.
