Maria works for the railway system, operating a signal box. She lives at home with her mother and her recently unemployed younger brother. Maria's dreams of becoming a librarian have come to naught, forcing her instead into a boring, repetitive job. The only real excitement in her life is provided by her sexually adventuresome best friend, the brassy, flamboyant Krystyna, who is desperate to leave the stifling boredom of the village. Krystyna goes through an assortment of men, none of whom stay with her for very long. But just as Maria is getting interested in a young man of her own, and the prospect of romance offers a glimmer of hope, her assertive friend unknowingly comes along and steals the boy away from her. Life gets more complicated when Maria sees her mother fall into a relationship, while her brother starts to earn a living by selling drugs...
