Alternating newsreels about the rise, glory and fall of Salazarism, with the domestic life of a bourgeois Portuguese family, the film draws a parallel between the figure of the traditional father and that of the dictator. The conflicts and the frustration of the two daughters of the couple are illustrated by their relationship with their parents, grandmother and housemaid. These private events are set against the general History of the country, through the use of visual and audio documentation and Brechtian-type songs, through which the positions of the main characters are criticized. Ultimately, this is a film identifying Portuguese fascism with a certain form of paternalism.
