  • The film is an adaptation from a novel by Vergilio Ferreira, a leading contemporary Portuguese novelist. The story tells of the awakening of a child to life, which takes place between Dona Estefania's manor house, his native village, the seminary and the fascinating city. Morning Mist contrasts zones of light and darkness, among which a young boy of twelve years is to discover himself and the world around him: the repression of the seminary, the poverty of his land, social inequality, the desires of his body, companionship, friendship and love. In the oppressive atmosphere of a seminary in the wilderness of Beira Alta, in the mid-40's, Antonio, the central character of Morning Mist, is to receive the definitive impressions which will leave lasting marks on his mind and body. Freedom beckons to him, meanwhile, and all these experiences will be no more than a brutal nightmare, that has made him see through to the core of life.

Born in 1942 in Lisbon, he studied history. He has been a regular film critic in a large number of publications; director of various cienma journals; and Jury member in many international film festivals around the world. He has published numerous books about the cinema.
