In a sailors' pub beside the river Tagus, Rita Portugal and Francisco Bernardes wait for the day to end: Jo‡o was assassinated this morning. The body was found in a corner of the studio, during the rehearsal for the last scene of O Bobo. A carpenter found it when the lights came on. Over a year ago, Francisco had decided to adapt Herculano's novel for the theater. Jo‡o had been the only one to encourage him right from the start. He himself had suggested the play should be put on in the old film studio of Lisboa Filmes. It had not been easy, with a half dozen or so actor and technician friends working for practically nothing. The first night was scheduled for the middle of the following week. Later, with the summer over, Francisco was planning to move to New York. As long as Jo‡o managed to sell the arms and get the money for the trip. And as long as Rita agreed to go with him.

and Ghislain Cloquet.
