The Well of the World is an imaginary city, home to a multitude of poor people, as well as a wealthy minority. Here we find Tomaz Cremalheira, a man who believes that nothing exists in life beyond facts. He will succeed in becoming a member of Parliament, however those same "facts" will reduce him to solitude. Then there is his wife, an exremely fragile woman, both physically and mentally, and their two children: Luisa, brought up to respect social convention and incapable of dealing with the turbulence of emotions; and Tomazinho, whose education based on mathematical certainty cannot protect him from vulgar behavior. There is Jose Grandela, who is used to buying anything and anyone. There is the story of the unfortunate Sebasti‡o, and of CecElia, who will eventually find both salvation and happiness.
