Lisbon, 1989: A middle-aged poor devil lives in a room, in a cheap family boarding house, in the old section of the city near the port. Tormented by illness and various adversities, the idiot feeds on Schubert and, perhaps, a vague love of cinema as a way of fighting against the misery which is his life. However, following a frustrated attempt to compromise the virtue of his landlady's daughter, he is thrown out into the street. Alone, deprived of any resources, he is confronted by the harshness of the city and is interned in an asylum, from which he will emerge, upon his considered decision as a free man, to fulfill a "rich and strange" mission, indicated to him by an old friend, a mental patient like himself: "Go out there and make them sweat!"

He was born in Figueira da Foz in 1939, to an anti-clerical, anti-Salazarist family. He worked as assistant director
to Perdigao Queiroga, and then, in 1963, went on to attend
the London School of Film Technique. At once filmmaker, notable film critic and poet, he began his career as a director of short and feature films (both for TV and cinema), in 1965.
