Joao de Deus's days pass quietly, between the icecream parlour where he works and his home, where, after his daily chores, he spends his spare time leafing through his collection of female pubic hairs, arranged in the precious album he calls his "Book of Thoughts". One day, he invites the butcher's daughter to his home, where he treats her to a milk bath and a meal of sweets. In order to cure her upset stomach, he resorts to his traditional remedy. The young woman's father decides to avenge the family's honor with a bloodbath. Having escaped with his life, Jo‡o returns from hospital, only to find his house wrecked, his "Book of Thoughts" reduced to ashes, and his job no longer available ...

He was born in Figueira da Foz in 1939, to an anti-clerical, anti-Salazarist family. He worked as assistant director
to Perdigao Queiroga, and then, in 1963, went on to attend
the London School of Film Technique. At once filmmaker, notable film critic and poet, he began his career as a director of short and feature films (both for TV and cinema), in 1965.
