Helene has reached the end of her marriage and the peak of her beauty, which time has begun to whither. She has decided to chance her luck with an art student. Paul, her spirited but indecisive lover, leaves her after one afternoon of love, to go to Naples. There, he meets Serge, a taciturn and disillusioned architect who drives a red Porsche. The two men drive from Naples back to Paris, visiting the landmarks of Serge's troubled past along the way. Helene, alone back in Paris, anxiously awaits her young lover's return.
