The suspended step of the stork: Side images
The recording of the making of a film is an exremely interesting, but also especially difficult undertaking. Even more so when the photographer chooses to move beyond the limits of classic photographic reporting and documentation, faces as he with a poetical work in which, in the case of Theo Angelopoulos, the creative process itself takes on near "Epic" dimensions.
Nikos Panayotopoulos attempts to convey the world of The Suspended Step of the Stork -a universe arranged by its maker- by combining the director' s values and perceptions with his own choices. That which, in the end, he will present is a personal interpretation of the characters, action and locations which, at the same time, succeeds in remaining faithful to the spirit and the ambience of the film itself.
The images he captures not only evoke the diffused feeling of melancholy, the charm and the poetry that characterise the film, but, and this is equally important, they bring out aspects of the ideological and social issues it poses. Besides, as Nikos Panayotopoulos himself has acknowledged, the oeuvre of Theo Angelopoulos has influenced, both aesthetically and ideologically, the formulation and development of his work as a photographer.
