ASPECTS OF AMERICAN CINEMA SPOTLIGHT ON HARVEY KEITEL
This year the Thessaloniki Film Festival welcomes one of the most famous actors of American cinema. On Sunday, November 12th, Harvey Keitel will be part of the Festival's events as he attends the formal opening of the tribute to Theo Angelopoulos at the Olympion Theatre at 9:30 in the evening. Subsequently, there will be a screening of Ulysses' Gaze in which he stars.
"When I read the script for Ulysses' Gaze, I knew I couldn't say no", he said. "It was a classic story taken From history about the inner search (a soul in search of itself). When I read the script it was like reading an incredible novel, like seeing a beautiful painting or listening to wonderful piece of music. I was an experience that took me somewhere I had never been, an experience I had never lived before."
Since his first films with Scorcese, Tobac, and Schrader, Harvey Keitel emits a restless spirit, an aggressive energy ready to explode. The paranoid gangster in Reservoir Dogs and the corrupt and whimsical cop in The Bad Lieutenant are two sides of the same coin. However, after the romantic turn in his career with The Piano, Harvey Keitel seems to limit his edgy characters and turn towards more convoluted ones (Smoke), and doesn't even hesitate to partake in the more inner and existentialistic searches of European cinema (Ulysses'' Gaze).
