Since they started, nine years ago, "New Horizons" have exhibited more than 380 films. An impressive number of films, most of which were by new directors, which have appealed to an appreciative public throughout the world. The 39 films which are being exhibited in this year's "New Horizons" programme are undoubtedly outstanding as true examples of a cinema distinguished by its style and by the viewpoint of its maker. Our aim was, and remains, the discovery of new filmmakers who take risks, are bold, original and who assure renewal. Within the framework of this option, I would like to underline an impressive appearance from Iran, the third film by Jafar Panahi entitled The Circle which was recently awarded the Golden Lion in Venice. Panahi outlines, in a taut and forthright manner, the cruel treatment of women in Islam.

The international list also includes the latest pictures of well-known directors such as Fridrik Thόr Fridriksson, Robert Lepage and Liv Ullmann.

A new section entitled "Explorations" draws attention to five first films by five new directors.

Two small tributes examine the current development of the Austrian cinema which, up to now, has been mainly known through the work of Michael Haneke. The cinephile public, I am sure, will be impressed by the films of directors such as Gotz Spielmann, Florian Flicker, and Diego Donnhofer. Among them, I would like to single out the presence of Mansur Madavi, a real discovery for me, who with his film With Eyes Closed proves that the cinema continues to be a high art form when it derives from inspired filmmakers.
