The mid 50s. Captain Miller, commander of a lightship off the coast of Virginia, takes on board his rebellious teenage son Alex, who has been in trouble with the police. Presently, three men drifting in a disabled boat are picked up. The flamboyant, epicene Calvin Caspary, and his two thuggish associates, the brothers Eddie and Eugene Waxler. They are apparently gangsters on the run, and Caspary asks Miller to raise anchor so that they can escape. But Miller insists on keeping the lightship anchored, to protect the other ships sailing in the area...
The film won the Jury's Special award at the 1985 Venice Film Festival.
