for a work exemplary for its imaginative use of minimal resources to make a film that is intelligent, entertaining and socially perceptive.
The FIPRESCI Prize for a film in the Parallel Sections to,
SAFAR E GHANDEHAR (Kandahar, The Sun Behind The Moon) by Mohsen Makhmalbaf (Iran, France), presented in the New Horizons section,
for a visionary, poetic, yet unsparing revelation of human suffering in conflict-torn Afghanistan.
The Jury awards a Special Mention to the film,
TO TAMA (Word of Honour) by Andreas Pantzis (Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria), presented in the "Greek Films 2001" section,
for the range and depth of its thought, the humour of its symbolism and the handling of its epic structure.
The jury were especially impressed by the variety and high level of the best films in this year's Greek selection.
