Is it any coincidence that some of the first motion pictures were nudes? Poised between stark, scientific observation of human anatomy in motion and the straightforward voyeurism of looking at people with their clothes off, those earliest motion studies presage and embody the essential cinematic tension between eros and thanatos, between desire and its sublimation. From the science text to the porno film, from the underground to the industrial, that space between preserving the dying present in front of the camera and inflaming the dying present in front of the projector, is the space inhabited and transgressed by this wild bunch of kino-anarchists.
