THE 42ND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL IN EIGHT CITIES,
FROM ALEXANDROUPOLIS TO TRIKALA

Seven years ago the International Thessaloniki Film Festival launched a new venture, the Regional Events, where a selection of films screened in the Festival was presented in numerous cities in the region around Thessaloniki. This year, for the period from 10th till 24th November, these events are going to expand in eight cities covering the regions from Thrace to Thessalia: Alexandroupolis in Thrace, Kilkis, Edessa, Katerini, Kozani, Kastoria, and Florina in Macedonia and for the first time Trikala in Thessalia. The initiative of the International Film Festival of Thessaloniki and the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace intends to bring the audience from provincial areas closer to past and recent cinematographic production and to make them participate in the celebration of Cinema in cities beyond the strict confines of Thessaloniki. Moreover, this year besides the unreserved support and collaboration of the Prefectural Administrations, the Municipalities and the Cinema Clubs, the International Film Festival and the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace are assisted -especially in the cities of Kastoria and Kozani- by young students participating in Cinema Groups formed in the Technical Colleges of these cities.

The International Film Festival of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace, decided -for the first time in 1995- as part of a pilot plan, to show a portion of its program in Florina and Kilkis. The audience of these cities responded in a positive way and the following year, the regional events expanded to five cities in total: Alexandroupoli, Kilkis, Edessa, Kastoria, Florina.
Year after year the response of the audience has grown steadily and so have the numbers of Greek and foreign film specialists who visited the cities discussing with the movie-goers about their films, the Cinema in Greece and abroad as well as its future in an international level. In 2000, two more cities, Katerini and Kozani, were also included in the program, while this year the city of Trikala was added to the list of cities hosting regional events. The future seems bright as far as this initiative is concerned, as next year the regional events may include even more cities.
