Jerry Schatzberg's exhibition "From Photography to Cinema" opened on Saturday 10th of November, at the State Museum of Modern Art, at Warehouse BI at Thessaloniki's Port. Attending were Jerry Schatzberg and Faye Dunaway.
The exhibition includes Jerry Schatzberg's fashion photographs coming from his collaboration in the fifties with magazines such as Vogue, McCalls, Esquire, Cosmopolitan, Life, Glamour, mixed with portraits of celebrities (such as Jimmy Hendrix, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Redford, Catherine Deneuve), as well as with landscapes, street scenes and female nudes. Among them, are two photographs of Faye Dunaway, taken in 1967. The actress eagerly posed by her own photographs.
At the opening ceremony of the Festival, Michel Demopoulos, the Director of the International Thessaloniki Film Festival, welcomed the artist present in Thessaloniki for the third consequent time and mentioned the turning points of his career in cinema, such as "Panic in Needle Park", "The Scarecrow", which was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival, but also "Puzzle of a downfall child" which marked Schatzberg's transition from fashion photography to directing. Demopoulos referred to him as "a lonely figure of American Culture, an artist who knows and works in the core of the system, but always pursues the independence of his judgement". He also pointed out that although Schatzberg has lived far from Hollywood, in his beloved New York, he is considered to be one of the major renovators of American cinema.
Although his successful collaboration with the best known fashion magazines would ensure him having anything that every modern professional would desire, "his restless spirit couldn't submit to the stereotypes of the American system, what we call the American Dream", stated Vasilis Papageorgopoulos, the Mayor of Thessaloniki, who at the end of the evening presented him with a photo collection.
The exhibition "From Photography to Cinema" will last till the 18th of November.
