PRESS CONFERENCE
BALKAN SURVEY
This year in its Balkan Survey section, the 43rd International Thessaloniki Film Festival presents 11 films (8 feature films and 3 short films) from Turkey, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, FYROM, Slovenia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The press conference was given today with the attendance of three Balkan directors, namely, Nae Caranfil from Romania (Philanthropy), Nenad Djuruc from Bosnia (Once upon a time on the west of Bosnia) and Milorad Milinkovic from Yugoslavia (Frozen stiff). The director of the Festival Michel Demopoulos spoke about a comprehensive assortment of Balkan films: "In the selection process this year, there was a desire to expand the programme of film production from our neighbouring countries. We wanted to include quality films as well as those that approach the audience more".
Cinema in the Balkans
Regarding cinema in Yugoslavia, Milorad Milinkovic said that this year was the best out of the last ten. "I'm not sure why this is the case. Considering the situation in Yugoslavia, there was an increase in the amount of productions and I hope this continues".
Nae Caranfil from Romania stated: "This year things are looking much better in Romania. We had many more premieres than in the previous years, ten to be precise, which is a record for Romania. However, in Romania things are different every year because the political situation is fluid and constantly changing. The people in charge regularly change so we're always unsure of how things will turn out in the future".
Nenad Djuruc from Bosnia answered the same question saying that, "In my country things were also better. We had two new feature films".
