SPECIAL PROGRAMMES

Orgasmic Cinema 2002

Curated by Athina Rachel Tsangari and Spencer Parsons

Last year we were privileged to unleash three screenings of thematically and aesthetically mutant movies on Thessaloniki to what we thought was an unsuspecting audience. But the loud, passionate uproar of the crowds revealed that we had been unsuspecting programmers. We knew art wasn't polite, but we'd ignored the more important fact: that the audience need not be either! The Eros of challenge and rebuke happily conquered the Thanatos of quiet submission. We're happy to return with a new assembly of freaks and geeks and unholy hybrids bent on deranging politics and culture and media and sex and violence and each other.

Spawned from a latter-day primordial soup of disrupted broadcasts, shuddering emulsions, re-purposed machinery and a dollop of good old toxic waste, the films of this year's Orgasmic programs flaunt new behaviors and exotic organs that adapt them to our daily madness, as much as estrange them from it. Forebears of a new cinematic species, transgressive, radical, and politically incorrect, they erupt from the gene pool like some irrational force beyond evolution. The hell with Darwin, if he can't take a joke!

More Eros, less Thanatos.
