STARS OF THE STEPPE


Bakhtiyar Khudoinazarov

He was born in Dushanbe, Tadjikistan, in 1965. He worked as a scriptwriter and in film production at the Tadjikfilm Studios, as well as in radio and television. He went on to study film direction at MoscowÕs Film Institute (VGIK), from where he graduated in 1989. He directed his first short film in 1986 and the documentary Dog Hunt in 1989, while still a student. His first feature, Little Brother, won awards at international film festivals, including the Grand Prize at the Manheim Film Festival. Kosh Ba Kosh was his second film as a director and his first as a producer. It won him the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival, 1993. In 1999, he made Luna Papa, which also won several awards at international film festivals. The Suit is his latest film.

Farruh and Azamat, two brothers of seventeen and seven, live with their grandmother in a small Tadjik town. One day, they set out to visit their father, who works as a doctor in a sanatorium. Tired of looking after his younger brother, and wishing to live his own life, Farruh is planning to leave Azamat with their father. As they travel by train across the steppes of Tadjikistan, they will meet with all kinds of adventures.

Mira, a young woman living in Western Russia, comes to visit her father in Dushanbe, the capital of Tadjikistan. Her father, a born loser, is addicted to gambling. Through a stroke of fate, he even loses Mira, his own flesh and blood, to an old codger who takes her as collateral. For Daler, a young gambler who is no stranger to risk, its love at first sight. Daler operates the local cable car, and his cabins transport all manner of goods: tourists, fodder, crates of beer, contraband; they even double as an aerial love nest. He prepares a romantic picnic, transcending heaven and earth, and proceeds to conquer Miras heart.

Three young men, aged around 18, live in a small Russian town by the Black Sea. Their world is one of poverty, teenage pranks, petty crime and various other morally dubious enterprises. Underneath their rough exterior, they are normal teenagers, with the usual problems, doubts and insecurities. Their dream is to escape the dragging, shabby existence in their hometown and to find some meaning to life¯or at least a lot of money and success. One day, while visiting a large city on the coast, they walk by a fashionable boutique and see a Gucci suit in the window. They make a pact: to obtain the suit at any price.
