STARS OF THE STEPPE


Satybaldy Narimbetov



He was born in Turkmenistan, in 1946. In 1969 he graduated from the Screenwriting Department of Moscows VGIK. In the eighties he went back to the VGIK and studied film direction under Georgyi Danelia. In 1972 he began working as a screenwriter and wrote the screenplay for the film Shock and Sher. He made his first film in 1974.

Esken is a little boy living in a mining village in southern Kazakhstan. It is the years following WWII, and Esken, curious by nature, proceeds to discover the world. On Saturday nights, the villagers get together and dance, while Esken plays his accordion. Life passes by peacefully, despite the fact that the Party watches over everything and arrests anyone considered to be an opponent of the rŽgime. One day, EskenÕs father is arrested and accused of allowing some Japanese soldiers Ðnow prisoners living in the villageРto sit at his table...
