Rashid Nugmanov
He
was born in Almaty, in 1954. He first studied architecture and then
film direction at MoscowÕs VGIK, under Sergei Soloviov. He graduated
in 1987. His graduation film, Ja-ha-ha!, about MoscowÕs underground
caused a scandal. His film The Needle, about the problem of drugs
in the USSR, won awards at numerous international film festivals.
He is considered a founder of the Kazakh New Wave. He lives in Paris.
