STARS OF THE STEPPE


Rashid Nugmanov

He was born in Almaty, in 1954. He first studied architecture and then film direction at MoscowÕs VGIK, under Sergei Soloviov. He graduated in 1987. His graduation film, Ja-ha-ha!, about MoscowÕs underground caused a scandal. His film The Needle, about the problem of drugs in the USSR, won awards at numerous international film festivals. He is considered a founder of the Kazakh New Wave. He lives in Paris.

Young Moro, a student in Moscow, returns to his native Almaty to collect money that is owed to him. While waiting out an unexpected delay, he visits his former girlfriend Dina, and discovers she has become a heroin addict. He decides to help her kick the habit and to fight the local drug mafia responsible for her condition. But Moro finds a deadly opponent in ÒThe DoctorÓ, the mafia kingpin who is exploiting Dina.
