Twelve-year-old Jasulan, the son of a shepherd, is suffering
from heart disease. His mother brings him from the distant steppes to a sanitarium
in Almaty where he can be treated by specialists. In the big city, where everyone
speaks Russian, this boy from the steppes who speaks only his native Kazakh is
a stranger in his own land. The children at the sanitarium reinforce this feeling,
by excluding Jasulan from their small community. Jasulan becomes more and more
introverted, keeping to himself and staying away from the others. But then, when
the first sexual feelings of adolescence begin to arrive, Jasulan will feel the
need to approach other people.
