1921, Vac, Hungary, 1921.
He studied law, ethnography and art history, and then film
directing at Hungary's Academy of Performing Arts. He directed
his first feature film in 1958. His film, The Round-Up (1965) won him international
acclaim. It was followed by many films, including the award-winning The
Red and the White (1967), Silence and Cry (1968) and his masterpiece, Red
Psalm (1972). He received Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Cannes (1979)
and Venice (1990) film festivals. |

Bologna, Italy, 1935.
Felice Carena's studio, his meeting with Oskar Kokoschka in Venice and
the Accademia di Brera with Achille Funi, were the landmarks of his education.
He has traveled, lived and held solo exhibitions and retrospectives in
many cities all over the world. In 1971, he made the film Vacanze nel deserto.
One of the most important painters of our time, he is also a published
writer and a set designer. |
ArsinŽe Khanjian

Beirut, Lebanon, 1958.
An actress with an international career on stage and screen, she is best
known for her ongoing collaboration with filmmaker Atom Egoyan, in whose
films Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter, and Felicia's Journey she
had a starring role. She has received several awards for her acting, including
a Genie
Award for Best Leading Actress for her performance in Egoyan's Ararat (2002). |
Yannis Bakoyannopoulos

Athens, 1934. He studied
law and political science in Athens. He worked as a journalist
and film critic, and presented radio and TV programmes
on cinema. He was the Culture Minister's Special Advisor on Cinema (1993-2004).
He has written hundreds of articles and essays in collective publications,
newspapers and magazines, as well as entries on cinema for encyclopedias. |
Alexander Payne

Omaha, Nebraska, USA, 1961.
He studied at Stanford University and UCLA, from where he graduated with
an M.F.A. in filmmaking. His first feature film, Citizen Ruth, won the
award for best screenplay at the 37th Thessaloniki IFF. His next two films,
Election (1999) and About Schmidt (2002), starring Jack Nicholson, also
won numerous distinctions at home and abroad. His latest film, Sideways,
is screening at this yearÕs festival. |
Donald Ramvaud

Anglo-Italian, he is co-founder of the European Script Fund (part of the
MEDIA Program). His production credits include Farewell My Concubine, Central
do Brasil and Cidade de Deus, nominated for 4 Oscars in 2004. In 2003,
he launched Buena Onda Films, a sales agent/production company that helps
filmmakers retain creative and artistic control of their work. |

Associate Director of Programming
at the Film Society of Lincoln Centre in New York. He is
also Editor-at-Large at "Film Comment", and a frequent
contributor to many other magazines, newspapers and journals in America
and Europe. HeÕs the author of a book on Robert Bresson's L'argent. He
is also the co-writer of Il mio viaggio in Italia, a documentary on Italian
cinema directed by Martin Scorsese, and a co-director and writer with Scorsese
of Lady by the Sea. |
