PRESENTATION IN HONOUR OF IAKOVOS KAMBANELLIS

Kambanellis, one of the greatest playwrights, completely rejuvenated and defined post-war Greek theatre with renowned works. He is also the screenwriter behind legendary Greek films such as Stella, by Michalis Kakoyannis.

A broad range creator, artist and person with ample and challenging social and political anxieties, Kambanellis' career as a movie director was unfortunately short: he shot only two films, a comedy with cherished actress Jenny Karezi and in 1968 during the junta and the astounding The cannon and the nightingale for which he won the Best Screenplay award at the 1968 Thessaloniki Film Festival.

The cannon and the nightingale is an anti-war film. Three stories of comedy, tragedy and satire revolving around Occupation and Resistance. The first part (The clock) and the third (The adverseries) deal with occupation while the second part (The secret engagement) with the Cypriot's struggle for liberation. In a fierce satirical and derisive mood, as well as manifest love and affection for his characters, Kambanellis unfolds the figures-caricatures, mocking Greek morals in the most charming of ways.
