Born in 1962 in Nanjing, Zhang Yuan studied in the cinematography department of the Beijing Film Academy between 1985-89. Rejecting a posting to the August First Film Studio upon graduation, he directed his first feature, Mama, about handicapped children. Throughout his career, Zhang has continued to play with the documentary form.

Wu Lindong and Du Xiaoju decide to marry after he confirms that she¢s the woman he¢s been waiting for all his life. As neither of their careers are taking off, marriage and kids are the natural next step. After a celebratory dinner with classmate Wang Yi, Lindong has a violent death diving into an empty swimming pool. Months later,Yi and Xiaoju meet by chance and are soon kissing in his car and fooling around in her room. She makes him profess that she¢s the woman that he¢s been waiting for since childhood before suggesting a sudden marriage. But maybe Yi and Xiaoju aren¢t so perfect for one another...
