DIVERSIONS
"This is a new section for the Festival, targeted at its young audience and the spectators looking for films that with issues on a more "adventurous" side. Entertaining, diverse, fresh, bizarre and often provocative, the films of this section are selected upon these criteria and are therefore screened after midnight."
Two very different faces of American entertainment are featured among these films. First, fifty years of Memphis music are brought to life in "Good Rockin' Tonight". Among the stars passing in and out of Sun Records' doors are Elvis, BB King, Johnny Cash, Howlin' Wolf and Jerry Lee Lewis. Then there is "The Cockettes", about a raucous San Francisco theatrical troupe, steeped in the drug and drag-infused glitter of the late 60s. John Waters is among the surviving members looking back. On the more experimental side are Rosa Von Praunheim's "Queens Don't Cry" and the story of performance artist Orlan, who creates art out of her plastic surgeries. A final sign of our times, in the era of collapsing "dot.com" companies, is "Start up.com", the story of one bumpy ride.
