GREEK PANORAMA

That the arts feature large in the Greek documentary landscape is obvious from this year's crop, featuring films about architect Aris Konstantinides, 18th century poet Athanassios Christopoulos and Piraeus-born actress Katina Paxinou ("Rocco and His Brothers"). Greece's Balkan context is important in Yiannis Lambrou's film about the country's flood of new immigrants and Apostolos Krionas' NET series about Greeks scattered throughout the Balkans. A couple of filmmakers consider Greece's cultural inheritance through the eyes of children. The past is evoked in both "The Souls of the Boats" (about a youngster's journey through the Aegean with the help of old sailors) and "Dance of Horses" (a boy learns his grandmother's tales and much older traditions).
