PORTRAITS - HUMAN JOURNEYS
There is room here for family portraits of renowned German actresses ("Marlene Dietrich-Her Own Song") and inspiring Bronx nuns ("Sister Helen") alike. From the promising Liz Garbus (of Emmy award-winning "The Farm: Angola, USA") comes powerful "The Execution of Wanda Jean". It traces the last days of the first black woman in modern US history to be killed under the death penalty. Lourdes Portillo summons the dead with "Senorita Extraviada" about the violent side of cheap labor town, Juarez, Mexico. Tales of survival and coexistence include Iranian "Hamsaran e Haj Abbas" (about the two elderly wives of a deceased man) and Swedish "Gosta and Lennart" (about a recently-split gay man and his loyal bulldog). Also from Iran comes short "Omia", and from the US, "Uncle Frank". Hellenic portraits are of a Thessaloniki seamstress, the Cypriot early modernist painter Pol Georgiou, and the poet Stratis Tsirkas (in a vintage film by Thessaloniki's legendary Tassos Psarras).
