Journalist, writer, director and political activist, Michael Moore is possibly the most popular documentary maker not only in the USA but also the entire world.
His films travel the globe, receive awards wherever they are screened and manage to secure distribution, thus achieving a remarkable - for the field of documentary filmmaking - commercial career. Michael Moore is the leading figure
of American documentary filmmaking, a position only Errol Morris could compete for.
Michael Moore's first contact with documentaries came in 1989 with Roger and Me, a film about the financial consequences of the GM factory closings in Flint, his home town. In order to finance the production, Moore even sold his house.
The result was a triumph. Roger and Me was screened around the world, received awards at the most important festivals (Berlin, Toronto, Chicago etc.), and finally turned out to be one of the most successful documentaries in history.
Moore's next film, Pets or Meat, continued where Roger and Me had left off.
Michael Moore is the epitome of alternative expression in the USA. His inexhaustible activity on a variety of social issues, his aggressive research, his diverse talents, his caustic humor and his daring reveal him as a man who does
not hesitate to communicate his radical message to the American masses. Michael Moore is, among other things, a filmmaker who knows how to make films able to entertain any and all viewers. He stands at the ideal point where commercialism
meets intellectualism. |
