To Yannis Smaragdis we owe the film essay, a particular form of documentary dealing with Greek poets and the landscapes that inspired them, in which word and image alternate. As well, not only do we owe the images of another Greece to the television series ERT in Northern Greece, but also those of another Athens in the series Smiling on the Way. Though most of these documentaries were made for television on 16 mm, nevertheless they surpass their television character, conveying the atmosphere of the time and place they refer to.

Smaragdis' documentaries have been screened and have received distinctions outside of Greece. With this small selection from his voluminous work, the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival - Images of the 21st Century gives the audience anopportunity to get to know and to enjoy some of his most characteristic documentaries, which will be shown on the big screen for the first time.
