Each year, the Thessaloniki
Documentary Festival selects a topic of social and political
controversy as its theme. Last yearŐs topic was children's
rights in the modern world and the year before that was the
situation in modern-day Palestine. This year, the 6th
Thessaloniki Documentary Festival focuses on the complex and
volatile topic
of terrorism seen through a historical, social, political,
as well as, personal viewpoint examined in 13 films from every
corner of the world. Simultaneously, a Conference on terrorism
will be held with the participation of specialized analysts in order to unfold the dark aspects of an issue that forms
political and social policies on a national and international
level worldwide.
In Greece, with the Olympic Games just around the corner and
throughout a world governed by policies of national securities
after September 11th , as well as the recent attack in Madrid
the issue of terrorism is timelier than ever. While people
turn to the media and their governments for information and
security, the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival focuses on
a historical, notional, social and personal approach of the
issue of terrorism to propose answers to questions that inevitably
arise in modern-day society.
Where does terrorism derive from? What role do politics play
in its development? Do boundaries between terrorist acts and
liberation parties exist? Do boundaries between government
violence and terrorism exist? What is terrorism like on a personal
level? The questions that arise from the examination of the
topic by the 6th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival are numerous
and complex.
