| Lygourio and the Ancient Theater / Yorgos Antoniou |

How can a society of farmers and cattle-breeders be transformed into a cultural focal point? The town of Lygourio was fortunate enough to be home to one of Greece’s most important ancient theaters. This divine gift was complemented by the launching, in 1954, of the annual Epidaurus Festival. Suddenly, stage directors, actors, set and costume designers, translators and technicians arrived at the homes of simple peasants seeking room and board. At the same time, these people brought with them a new culture, new attitudes and manners. The festival brought together two very different worlds: that of rural Greece and that of intellectual Greece. This daily consorting – in the homes, in the marketplace, during rehearsals and then at the official performances – gradually reshaped the (individual and collective) intellectual conscience of these simple people. Coming in contact with the art of the theater, the ancient texts and the history of their homeland benefited them in ways that are still visible today.
