  JON ALPERT AWARD CEREMONY

JON ALPERT AWARD CEREMONY MARCH 23

The atmosphere was enthusiastic in the crowded Pavlos Zannas theatre Friday night, March 23 during the ceremony held for the presentation of an award to Jon Alpert, the American filmmaker and honoured guest of the 9th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival - Images of the 21st Century.

“Tonight we honour an amazing creator, journalist, activist, documentary filmmaker”, the Artistic Director of the Festival, Dimitri Eipides characteristically said, adding that he felt proud to present the honorary award to him.

Jon Alpert took the floor, thanking the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival for this distinction, and for giving him, as he stressed, the opportunity to meet other people in the field who are as passionate as he is with the documentary. He continued, noting that in an age that is characterized by ready made fast food and bad television, it is a distinct honor for him that the festival decided to screen his work: “The camera is like a magic key, it can open people’s eyes and their hearts. It is like a treasure that we always carry with us from one end of the world to the other. The camera can stop time, preserve it, share it with others.”

The award was presented by the President of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Georges Corraface, who jokingly urged the American filmmaker to look on the award as a small reward and revenge for all the obstacles he has had to overcome in his work up to now. “I wish that you can open as many doors as possible with your magic key, the camera”, Mr. Corraface concluded.
