Let's cinema / General Information

"Let's cinema!" was set up on the basis of a common decision taken by the Ministers of Education and Culture, in order to offer courses on the arts and cultural activities at school. It is also part of the youth programme "Greece under 30".

The educational programme "Let's cinema!" that introduces cinema to students was originally set up by the Thessaloniki Film Festival in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. The programme aims to bring the students in touch with the art of cinema and especially the basic principles of film narrative.

Today image is one of the main information channels and a dominant means of communication. It shapes the personality of young people and has a decisive influence on their perception of the world around them. The programme "Let's cinema!" aims to encourage sudents to express their opinion on films they watch. It thus focuses on the possibility of a critical approach towards the audiovisual products they consume in their everyday life. The programme's main goal is to shape perceptive viewers and eventually conscious citizens.

Two programmes have been set up sharing a common structure and orientation; one for the Elementary School and one for the High School. During the programme, the students are provided with information leaflets and study guides, they watch two films on a similar topic but of different aesthetics and narrative structure and they attend a course on analysis of film narrative. High school students also have the opportunity to make a short film: with the help of a professional director and having at their disposal all the necessary technical equipement and the support of their teachers, they write the script and then prepare and shoot a five-minute film during two weekends. These films share a common feature: they are shot at the school premises and in the surrounding area. All members of the team succesively take up different tasks in the film crew on a rotational basis in order for everyone to get a full idea of the work involved in shooting and editing a film. All the films are screened at the end of the school year at the Students' Film Festival "Let's cinema!".
