In 1998 the International Thessaloniki Film Festival achieved
two of its main goals: it started functioning within a new
legislative framework, thus safeguarding its autonomy, and
it acquired its own permanent venue in Thessaloniki, the
historic Olympion cinema complex.
Under these circumstances the Festival changed from being the
organizer of a single festival, however important, to undertake
the programming of a series of cinema events throughout the
year, not only in its two main venues in Thessaloniki, the
Olympion and the Pavlos Zannas cinemas, but also in Athens
and in other cities around Greece.
Thanks to this new framework, the Olympion operates throughout
the year presenting the most interesting films of modern-day
production, plus tributes to great filmmakers and programmes
dedicated to contemporary film production from around the world.
Another important activity is a series of educational programmes
which aspire to form a new generation of film viewers and familiarize
the young audiences with the technique and art of filmmaking.
Apart from the main festival, three important events were added
to the ITFF permanent calendar: an international documentary
festival, a festival dedicated to films on dance and choreography
and a student film festival -related to the educational programme
previously mentioned.
In its new endeavor the Festival has established a close collaboration
with various local and international film institutions, with
cultural, educational and social organizations, as well as
with embassies and foreign cultural institutions in Greece.
