Arenal was inspired by the songs of Majorcan Maria del Mar
Bonet. In this ballet, Duato seeks to capture the uninhibited
cheerfulness of the Mediterranean character, contrasted with
the struggle of everyday life. A group of male and female dancers
reflect the happiness and jubilation of the music in pas de
deux, pas de trois and pas de quatres set to Greek songs translated
into the Catalan language, and Majorcan songs by Maria del Mar
Bonet. In juxtaposition, a single female dancer, dances to four
songs performed a capella. These seem to arise as an agonised
cry from the heart. The dancer's movements are close to the
ground, expressing the importance of the land.
