"Court.[caught] explores locking and unlocking movement within a confined space. A sense of 'game' is created, using linear and boxed phrases and incorporating looped sound from the squash court. Footage is sped up and slowed down; pixel animation becomes part of this process. The figures move like seeing another energy.
A sense of spectator is also developed. Being watched and watching.
We have worked with the space as a choreographic element. By exploring 'presence and absence' and utilising reversed natural movement, the attempt is to develop a sense of flux. The walls and floor are used as surfaces to move on. This area is an arena, a reduced space which concentrates and amplifies the activity held within it."
Daniel Belton, director's notes (c) 2001
Dancelab is an initiative of the University of Otago (New Zealand), Dance Studies Department. In this work, all participants were involved in the development, filming, and editing of this project.
