Mehr als Bewegung - Europa trift Indien mit Tanz

2001 / 60'

Director:
Jorg Jeshel, Brigitte Kramer
Production: Nachtaktiv, 3sat / ZDF, Goethe Institut - Inter Nationes
Germany

Dating back thousands of years, dance is a deeply rooted tradition in Indian civilization. Yet, it is also a part of everyday religious and ritual practice. The combination of these elements with the entirely different practice of modern dance in Western civilization could only result in fascinating experiments for both Indian and Western choreographers. Some of the latter have visited India or have been influenced by the philosophy or kinesiology of Indian dance. Featured in this film, Chandralekha, Astad Deboo, an exponent of the younger generation, Malavikka Sakkurai, the great artist of 'Bharata Natyam' classical Indian dance, and Jayachandran Palantry, a great master of the revolving Sufi dance speak of their experiences in blending and the mutual supplementation of elements from the Indian point of view.
