A tour de force by Peter Greenaway… Without disavowing his
aesthetics of abundance, Greenaway has nonetheless succeeded
in effacing himself totally in favour of De Keersmaeker's choreography
on an unexpected encounter between a woman and a man. The overwhelming
violinstrokes of Bela Bartok's Sonata for violin 3 and 4 the
scenery of the Ghent Opera House foyer and the solemn, black
and white cinemascope-framing, create a vast space in which
dancer Fymiyo Ikeda can free all of her blissful energy. The
visual flair of her subtle and sensual performance is matched
by Greenaway's skilful editing in juxtaposing hard close-ups
of Ikeda's face and long-shots of her vulnerable figure in the
empty room. Rosa is at once the respectful capturing of a dance
performance and a moving love story.Outstanding photography
ny Sacha Vierny.
