"Birth," "Death," and "Pause"
provide the threefold subject matter for Sola. Kevin Cottam
reflects the philosophical views of the Far East about these
concepts, expressed in Tolentino's dance, deeply influenced
by the Thai tradition. The emphasis is placed on specially trained
hands, which become an extension of the soul, vivid colours,
and the presence of nature not merely as a visual setting but
above all as a source of inspiration and learning. Nature is
speaking through the artist about the joy of birth - the passage
from one world into another (Birth). Becoming a particle of
nature, the dancer records the need for isolation that characterizes
death as a phase of redefinition before returning into the social
world (ABO / Ashes). The peace and stillness of "Pause"
provide the cover for intense activity on a deeper level, which
reaches us through a dance ritual (Sadhana).
