FOLD: Sight(as)Sound, Sound(in)Sight

Ten audiovisual choreographies unfold, interact, are transplanted and transubstantiated in the course of eight evenings. In VideoDance2003, Greek and international artists in collaboration respond to the challenge of a hybrid program, offering for the first time to the Athenian public a synaesthetic environment, and a concrete, organic system of moving image and sound.

Music, sound environments, abstract video, computer animation, kinetic art, and 3D images are composed, recomposed and decomposed in real time, articulating a hyper-space in which the fluidity among genres and media erupts into an instant, mutual exchange of their properties: Sonic Vision, Visual Hearing, Transformer-Space, Body-Screen, Body-Speaker.

The expansion of cosmic consciousness, the mutation of the human body to simultaneously a penetrable medium and a user, the persistent and compulsive convertibility of a techno-physical eroticism through the convergence of arts, media, machines and senses, is not a new story. Yet, in recent years, it has become apparent that the homemade and improptu design of tools on laptops and bedrooms all over the world, is indispensable to the creative process itself. The almost childlike immediacy between the human body and its technological extensions is the undeniable gift of the 21st century. The global mass of young artists / inventors / geeks grows autonomous from the mainstream industry (World Geeks Unite!), decodes and cracks its mythology. Boldly and unapologetically, they play, distort, "destroy" sound and light through disarmingly low-budget tools, introducing a new, fecund experimental era for the audiovisual arts.

FOLD is inspired by / dedicated to the pioneer visionaries of audiovisual immersion such as Isaac Newton, Etienne Jules Marey, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Wassily Kandinsky, Arnold Schonberg, Scriabin, Jordan Belson, James Whitney - scientists and artists who, way ahead of their time, resisted the positivist boundaries between sound and light, and experimented systematically on early interfaces for "sonifying" light and "radiating" sound.

The FOLD sessions inaugurate the BIOS space, inviting some of the most prominent members of the international electronica and light art scenes.

Arno Scheper | 17/09/03 (NDL)

Dutchman Arno Scheper revisits the pioneers of the moving image; in his search for new means of visual expression, he has come up with his own hybrid machines with built-in cameras which project images in the most astonishing manners (e.g. through the rotating motion of a drill).

Byetone | 18/09/03 (GER)

Under the name Âyetone, Ïlaf Âender and Jens Rempel present their work as an unorthodox "bricolage" of digital sounds toward a minimal, concrete end result. They are also in charge of the visual arrangement of their sonic explorations, employing simultaneous video projections generated by proprietary software.

Coti | 15/09/03, 19/09/03 (GR)

Well-known as the producer of Stereo Nova, Coti K is one of the pioneers of electronica in Greece. He has also produced and published a number of his own projects, the latest among his releases being Metamemoria for Vibrant Music. He is currently in Brussels with Tuxedomoon, recording their comeback album.

Effekt | 13/09/03, 16/09/03 (UK/DK)

Stefan Mylleager, member of v.j. Effekt from Denmark, has participated during the last two years in more than 30 collaborations with some of the most important artists of the contemporary electronica scene, such as Pole, Richard Devine, Process, etc. In 2001, along with the co-founder of Effekt, Kaspar Daugaard, they won the Warp Records and Squarepusher digital animation contest with their phenomenal video clip "Exploding Psychology." Their work focuses on combining video and real-time graphics in order to merge image and sound, experimentations which often result in astonishing visual effects.

Electroware | 17/09/03 (GR)

Also known as dj Stefan, Stefanos Konstantinidis, former member of Groove Machine, has been on the forefront of the Greek electronica scene for the past 15 years. A composer and a producer, he has released his projects on Rubber, Elfish, Pace, and more recently on Terry Francis' music label in collaboration with Lorenzo. @Fold, Electroware presents his new, unreleased work.

Fluxion | 16/09/03 (GER)

Konstantinos Soumblis from Greece is the founder of Vibrant Records music label, which serves as a vehicle for experimental music addressing both the intellectual and the emotional perception of the listener. Fluxion's music, with its freestyle melodies and dub vibrations, invokes a constant, skillful minimalism.

Francisco Lopez | 19/09/03 (SPAIN)

For the past 20 years, Francisco Lopez has been in search of a dynamic, 'total immersion' minimalist sonic scape. Listeners are invited to have their eyes blindfolded while listening to his music, in order to focus entirely to what he calls "exploration of surround noise" - an exploration which requires the listener's total personal immersion.

Ilios | 19/09/03 (GR/SP)

In the thirteen years which have elapsed since their first appearance in 1992, Ilios have released 8 personal albums and collaborated on 7 multimedia projects. They have also established their own music label, Antifrost, in 1997, initially based in Athens and later in Barcelona. The work of Ilios is characterized by the extensive utilization of the sonic range, from total silence to total noise, in their covers of well-known tunes.

Kine | 16/09/03 (GR)

A group of friends and artists with a common interest in visual material from films which have marked the development of avant-garde cinema. Having organized several experimental shows at various locations in Athens, their Super 8 loops are keenly expected @ Fold.

Lo-Fi | 16/09/03 (GR)

Lambros Tsamis is one of the few people who knows so well the Athens underground scene, in which his dj sets have always been a point of reference. @ Fold, Lo-Fi is improvising on visuals by Kine.

PanAmerican | 20/09/03 (USA)

Mark Nelson, familiar from Labradford, comes with the recent release of his third personal album as PanAmerican. With electronics now a clear priority compared to his Labradford period, he oscillates atmospherically between dub, funk, and bossa nova references, like very few musicians can.

Paranormale | 15/09/03 (GR)

A graphic designer and a musician, member of the "bass class" movement and the Vizuala Faux group. Paranormale is notorious for his torrential dj sets. His works have been released on Bios Records and 1001tilt with drog_a_tek group. @Fold, Paranormale will perform live soundtracks to Maya Deren's groundbreaking, poetic films.

Rasmus Mobius | 13/09/03 (DK)

Rasmus Mobius has already made an impact in the Danish electronica scene, culminating in his appearance in the Roskilde Festival. His projects are released on German label Thinner. He is currently working on his first personal album for Statler&Waldorf. His music style carries influences from electronic dub to hip-hop.

Vizuala Faux | 20/09/03 (GR)

An open society of artists with a common interest in visual and graphic design experimentation. They began their activity in Athens in 1999, and have provided the visuals in many concerts and festivals.

Voltnoi | 15/09/03 (GR)

A member of Vizuala Faux and drog_a_tek, he has collaborated with musicians and visual artists in a number of audiovisual projects. His latest work was the multi-media installation Tone Home, in collaboration with Coti and Dimitris Haritos.
