An underground rock band in 1980s Russia experiments with a love triangle and the confines of censorship in Soviet Russia. Caught between musical passion, yearning romantic desire and a changing political landscape, the band tries to rise from their humble performances to make it big. Inspired by the early years of two real rock stars, the film created a new influential mythology, not as an expression of nostalgia for the times before Perestroika, but as a response to the repression of creativity in today’s Russia.

Kirill Serebrennikov
A Russian theater and film director, he staged his first performance during his early school years. His films received awards in several international festivals (Kinotavr Russian FF, Rome IFF, Karlovy Vary IFF, Locarno IFF). Since 2012 he has been the artistic director at the Gogol Center. Since August 2017, he's kept under house arrest by the Russian government.
