Renoir

Runowâru

In the summer of 1987 in suburban Tokyo, 11-year-old Fuki Okita lives between hope and grief. Her father, Keiji, is battling terminal cancer, frequently in and out of hospitals; her mother Utako works full-time, stretched thin both by work and the emotional labor of caring for him. Left largely to her own devices, Fuki turns inward, fascinated by telepathy and other mystical escapes, deploying her vivid imagination to make sense of loss and distance. Written and directed by Chie Hayakawa, Renoir is a coming of-age drama deeply rooted in her own experience of having a father with a terminal illness. The film premiered in Competition at the 78th Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d’Or. With Yui Suzuki’s natural, hauntingly sincere performance as Fuki, it becomes an elegiac meditation on childhood, mortality, and the fragile bond between imagination and reality.
